LIONS FACE ROBINS IN SEASON OPENER

Leicester will start the new Premiership season with four matches in the space of eight days beginning with an attractive home fixture against the Swindon Robins on Saturday 1st April.

The Wiltshire club are led by the former Lions captain Jason Doyle who spent two years at Beaumont Park during which time the Australian scored a total of 584 league points from fifty-four appearances.

Forty-eight hours later the Lions make the short trip to Wolverhampton to race against last season’s league champions who beat Belle Vue in the final of the play-offs last October. The Lions are soon back on the road again and travel south to meet the Somerset Rebels in a preliminary round of the Knock-out Cup competition. It is three years since the two clubs last met when they were both in the middle tier of British Speedway and during the winter the Rebels were accepted into the Premiership. Finally, the opening schedule of fixtures is completed with the visit of the Poole Pirates to Beaumont Park.

“It is an interesting start as to how the fixtures have fallen and it will be a good gauge to measure ourselves against Swindon, Wolverhampton and Poole who are three very good sides. Our visit to Somerset is the first of a two leg tie and whoever wins on aggregate will meet King’s Lynn in the next round. It is a little of the unknown for both clubs at present as the Rebels will be experiencing a higher level of racing for the first time and of course we will have virtually a new team” explained the Lions Promoter David Darcy.
